Reid has game-wining hit in first game

Game One
03/27/2010
Rangers - 12
Mets - 11

PEARLAND, TX – Reid Mathews hit an RBI single to third base, knocking in the game-winning run as the Rangers scored four runs in the bottom of the final inning to come back and defeat the Mets 12-11, Saturday afternoon in Pearland.

Trailing 11-8 going into the bottom of the final inning, the first four Ranger batters reached base on singles as the Rangers cut the lead to 11-9. With the bases still loaded, the next Rangers player hit a ball straight back to the pitcher but the throw to first base got away allowing the Rangers to score two runs and tie the game at 11-11. Two batters later with the bases loaded again, Reid got a chance at the game-winning hit and proved to be successful by driving in the winning run.

Earlier in the game in his first at bat, Reid grounded out to the pitcher. It was a good swing and he made solid contact however, the Mets pitcher made a terrific play to stop the ball and then tag him out before he reached first base.

The Rangers scored the maximum of four runs in each of the three innings played. The Rangers held the Mets to just three runs in the top of the first inning, which proved to be the key to the win.

In the field, Reid worked two innings in the outfield roaming back and forth between center and right field. With no balls reaching his side of the outfield, Reid took advantage of free time to at times take off his glove for no good reason, play with dirt and spin around in circles. Being “baseball ready” was the chant of the day from the on-looking parents and grandparents (Gigi and Papa).

Reid also made an appearance at short stop in the final inning but wasn’t quite “active” or “engaged” enough to make a play on any ball hit to his side of the infield. We’re still working on his defense.

The Rangers move to 1-0 on the season and will next be in action on Saturday, April 10. Reid improves his batting average on the season to .500 (1-for-2) with one RBI.
